Editor’s Note: Cedric Clark, Executive Vice President of Store Operations at Walmart U.S., recently shared a note with Walmart U.S. store managers.
In our effort to make Walmart the best place to shop, we recognize the importance of making it the best place to work. To achieve this, we are committed to investing in our associates, offering competitive front-line pay, and providing benefits that support the health and well-being of our associates in all aspects of life.
Today, we are taking the next step in this journey by increasing our commitment to you through an investment in store manager wages and a redesigned bonus program. Your pay consists of two parts: base pay and an annual bonus, and we are updating both.
Firstly, we are simplifying and increasing store manager wages. With this investment and upcoming annual increases, the average salary for store managers will rise from $117,000 to $128,000 per year.
Secondly, we are revamping our store manager bonus program. In addition to sales, your store’s profit will play a more significant role in calculating your annual bonus. If you meet all targets, your bonus could now be up to 200% of your base salary.
We recognize that the number one driver of job satisfaction is an associate’s manager. We firmly believe that you, our front-line leaders, are the best in retail. You not only exceed customer expectations daily but also serve as the CEOs of multimillion-dollar businesses, driving the development of our next generation of leaders.
We view an investment in you as an investment in our culture, core values, and the day-to-day experience of every associate in every store. Investing in you is an investment in our future.
I am proud that Walmart is making this investment following last year’s increase in starting pay for stores. Due to these investments in front-line hourly associates and upcoming annual increases, our U.S. average hourly wage will soon exceed $18.
Approximately 75% of our field management teams, including myself, started their Walmart careers in hourly roles. My journey began as a sporting goods hourly associate in Washington state. I was able to advance my career because people invested in me. I know firsthand that the possibilities are endless when working at Walmart, for you and for everyone you lead every day.
This investment is rooted in belief. We believe in you as the keepers of our culture today, identifying and nurturing the future leaders of our company. You make a difference, and we are thrilled to continue this journey with you.
